The famous Snowbird Tram is part of what makes the experience so iconic. In just six minutes, it climbs 2,900 vertical feet to the top of Hidden Peak, home of the Summit Lodge and jaw-dropping 360-degree views. From there, advanced skiers can drop into Mineral Basin, cruise through Gad Valley, or test their legs on the steep pitches of Great Scott.

Before the powder hounds and the après-ski scene, Snowbird Resort was just a rugged patch of land in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, known more for its silver mining history than for deep turns and steep lines.
In 1938, the famous Norwegian ski legend Alf Engen helped launch what would become the Alta Ski Area, bringing powder lovers to the slopes of Little Cottonwood Canyon for the first time. With its deep snowpack and rugged terrain, Alta quickly earned a reputation as a mecca for skiers, and it laid the groundwork for something even bigger.
A few decades later, Ted Johnson, then the manager of Alta Lodge, looked across the canyon and saw untapped potential in the rugged mining land just below. His dream was to create a new kind of mountain experience; one that complemented Alta Ski Area but offered even more terrain and operated year-round.
That’s when Johnson joined forces with Dick Bass, a Texan businessman and passionate skier, and together they brought that vision to life. In 1971, Snowbird Ski Resort opened its lifts to the public, featuring the now-iconic Aerial Tram, three ski lifts, and the original Lodge at Snowbird.
Over the next few years, expansion took off. The Cliff Lodge, The Inn, and the Iron Blosam Lodge were built, helping Snowbird cement its place as a cornerstone of the Utah ski scene. But it wasn’t just about size, it was also about heart. Snowbird became known for its rugged terrain, pioneering spirit, and commitment to preserving the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains.

“Interlodge” is a term most visitors to Alta have never heard before unless they have visited our area in the past. Little Cottonwood Canyon, where Alta and Snowbird are located, receives an average of 500 inches of snow each season.

Snowbird Ski Resort, located at 9385 Snowbird Center Dr, Snowbird, Utah, 84092, in Little Cottonwood Canyon, about 40 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport, depending on traffic conditions. That means you can go from baggage claim to chairlift in under an hour. It’s perfect for making same-day skiing or quick weekend trips a breeze.

It’s so close you can fly and ski the same day! Snowbird Resort is only 28 miles from Salt Lake City and a scenic 45 minute drive. Along Highway 210, Snowbird Resort is the first resort you get to in the Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Getting to Snowbird Resort from Salt Lake City is easy. If you’re driving, take the I-15 south and the UT-210 to Little Cottonwood Canyon Road. For detailed directions, click here. It is not necessary to rent a car for your stay in Snowbird. The Alta Shuttle or Alpine Transportation offer a convenient service from Salt Lake City airport to Snowbird Resort.
Please note if you are driving to Snowbird the road conditions are unpredictable and a 4-wheel drive, all wheel drive or snow chains are required by law during the winter months. Our heavy snowfall can result in avalanches at which point the town may implement ‘interlodge’ for avalanche control. During this time, all road access is closed. Parking is limited in Snowbird and as part of Operation Stay Safe, an online parking reservation system has been implemented during Covid. Please ensure you reserve your free parking spot prior to arrival! Alternatively, you can make use of the incentivized Ride Space carpooling program to and from the slopes.
Access to the slopes of Snowbird varies with each vacation rental. Our Aerial Overview Video will give you a good visual reference for each Alta Chalets property location. If your rental home does not have ski-in/ ski-out access, the Alta town shuttle makes a continuous loop of the Bypass Road during daytime hours until 5pm and takes only a few minutes to get to the Snowbird base areas..
Purchasing lift tickets has become somewhat of a moving target due to fluctuating pricing and the variety of lift ticket options. Many resorts have moved to a system that prices tickets in a manner similar to airline and hotel pricing – the higher demand, the higher the ticket price and vice versa.
The Snowbird Center: The Snowbird Center is the heart of Snowboard with cafes, restaurants, ski shops, the Tram Bar and the Snowbird Mountain ski school. A vibrant and busy zone where skiers and riders gather to board the tram, listen to live music in the Skiers Plaza and enjoy Snowbirds best aprés ski while watching the die-hards make their last run of the day. The Snowbird Tram and Peruvian Express High-Speed Quad are located at the Snowbird Center.
The Creekside Day Lodge: The Creekside Day Lodge sits at the base of Gad Valley and is a great base for beginners away from the central hub of Snowbird. The Mountain School now offers lessons from the lodge, there is a great café with an outdoor patio, a ticket office, locker rooms and a small shop with rentals and accessories for your convenience. The Mid-Gad and Gadzoom lifts are located at the Creekside Day Lodge.

The iconic Snowbird Tram has taken skiers to Hidden Peak to discover Snowbirds vast terrain for nearly 50 years. In 2005, the 600-ft Peruvian Tunnel conveyor belt was added giving access to an additional 500 skiable acres in Mineral Basin. The tunnel is a unique Snowbird experience taking you back in time as you ride the magic carpet down memory lane, with old photographs, mining implements and background music, to the sunny Mineral Basin bowls.

Snowbird Resort has the longest ski season in Utah. The 2020-21 season dates for Snowbird Resort are November 30 to 24 May 2021 (estimated). These dates are determined by both snow conditions and Covid-19 restrictions. Stay up to date with current resort information here!
There are four different parking zones, Entry 1 is best for parking at the Creekside Day Lodge and Entry 2 for the Snowbird Center. As part of Operation Stay Safe, Snowbird have implemented an online parking reservation system for the season. Please ensure you reserve your free parking spot prior to arrival!
December brings early season snow falls and, by January, Snowbird has a solid base and lots of light powder for prime Snowbird ski conditions. Many of the mountain slopes are north facing making Snowbird a prime spring skiing destination in Utah. Bluebird days, warm weather and perfect Utah powder! Snowbird boasts the longest ski season in Utah and stays open until at least Memorial Day, some years sneaking extra days into June, conditions permitting. Little Cottonwood Canyon is famous for steep skiing and deep powder and is the extreme ski capital of North America. The aerial tram takes you to the summit and with three advanced/expert gates connecting skiers to Alta Resort (sorry, no snowboarders allowed!), you have instant access to a combined 5,100 acres of famous Utah powder.
Snowbird Resort has three main ski zones with 27% beginner terrain, 38% intermediate and 35% advanced and expert runs.
There are three slow ski areas on Snowbird for beginners to enjoy. Chickadee next to the Cliff Lodge is ideal for first timers with a magic carpet, training hill, chairlift and a short gentle slope perfect for learning the basics of skiing. If this is too easy, head to the west end of the resort (Entry 1) to access the Gad Valley. The Baby Thunder area has challenging green runs, child-friendly tree trails and a designated family area with a Mini Miners Camp to keep the kids entertained for hours. The Mid-Gad lift takes you to Big Emma which is a challenging green run down to the base of the mountain. The top-station is quite steep so for a warm up on gentler terrain off-load at mid-station for Lower Emma.
If you’re comfortable on Big Emma from the top, you may be ready to advance to slightly steeper terrain and head to the summit. Take the Tram and make your way over to Mineral Basin. Lupine Loop and the Baldy Express lift will take you to fun beginner runs (Claim Jumper, Lucky Boy, Birds Nest) but there’s no easy way down so you’ll have to ride the Tram back to base!
Snowbird has a reputation for having slighter steeper blues than other Rocky Mountain resorts. Over a third of Snowbird Resort is dedicated to confident intermediate skiers who take their pick of groomed or ungroomed terrain on any of Snowbird’s chairlifts. Big Emma is a good indication you’re ready to tackle Snowbird’s intermediate slopes. The lower terrain from the Mid-Gad, Gadzoom and Gad 2 lifts is a good place to start before heading to the summit. Gad 2 takes you to Baldy’s Bowl for epic views and Bassawkwards is a great blue run back to Mid-Gad.
Head to the summit for more diverse terrain to test your skills. The Snowbird Tram offers a sweet ride to the summit with stunning views and a glimpse of the ski-pros cruising the moguls below. The alternative (and often less crowded!) is the Peruvian High-Speed Quad. From the summit the 2.5 mile Chip’s Run in Peruvian Gulch is a thrilling high-speed cruise with a 2,900 vertical right back to base. Or ski the legendary Cirque into the backside Mineral Basin, a wide-open bowl with everything from green groomers to blue cruises and diamond trails.
Snowbird is rated one of the top ski resorts for expert skiing and freeriding in the USA and draws skiers and snowboarders from across the globe for the challenge and thrill of vertical cliff jumps, tight chutes, epic bowls, leg-burning moguls and perfect powder (lots of it!).
From the tram, the Cirque Traverse opens to double blacks on either side. You can drop into Mineral Basin or to Middle Cirque or Regulator Johnson and onto the Wilbere Bowl. To avoid the tram lines, the Peruvian Express takes you to Peruvian Gulch to High Baldy Traverse, Fields of Glory, BlackJack Traverse. The Gad 2 chairlift gives you access to the narrow chutes, steep groomers, tree runs and expert terrain of the Gad Valley or head up on Little Cloud to the Road to Provo into the Rasta Chutes and onto Baldy Bowl.
Mineral Basin is accessed via the tunnel from the top of the Tram and the Little Cloud and Peruvian Express lifts. Traverse to the right for more difficult terrain in the Bookends and extreme cliff jumping at Hamilton Cliffs and Flora Cliffs. For narrow chutes the Charmonix and Living’ the Dream Chutes on the backside of Alta’s Mount Baldy are perfect for advanced levels. Expert skiers can take the Baldy Express Lift from Mineral Basin to connect to the steeps of Alta Ski Area. Snow makes a huge difference – when you start to progress to more challenging terrain, it is a whole lot easier when there is good snow vs. hard-packed or icy conditions.
Snowbird’s terrain is geared towards intermediate and advanced boarders but there are three designated areas for beginners and first-timers to find their balance and learn the basics. The Chickadee Bowl is gentle and gives snowboarders a chance to get used to riding the lift. The Baby Thunder and Mid-Gad chairlifts take you to gentle greens and challenging blues.
Snowboarders with skill have 73% of Snowbird’s terrain to discover and with high-speed chairs and the iconic aerial tram, finding fresh powder and new challenges is easy. Snowbird is divided into 3 areas:

Snowbird Resort is a powder playground for snowboarders with narrow chutes, vertical cliff jumps and natural rails on many of the intermediate and expert trails. Thanks to unlimited natural features, The Bird’s Big Emma Terrain Park is often overlooked.
Snowbird’s Terrain Park is accessed from the Mid-Glad lift at mid-station or you can offload at the top and warm up on Upper Big Emma first. The park caters to beginner riders with a half-pipe and a variety of fun rails, boxes and jumps for honing your skills. If rotations and rodeo flips are more your style, head to the summit and carve your way down Chip’s Run. Local skiers and snowboarders build jumps on this epic 2.5 mile run from the summit down to the base.

The Cliff Lodge: The Cliff Lodge is Snowbird’s flagship hotel. The lodge is slope side and spans 10 stories with spectacular mountain and canyon views. The lodge features a fitness center,steam room, dry sauna and heated outdoor pool with ski lockers for guests. The Lodge Bistro is an ideal setting for aprés ski or intimate dinner.
The Iron Blosam: The Iron Blosam Lodge is a condominium lodge located near the Snowbird Center with accommodation ranging from studios to loft suites. The lodge features outdoor pool and spa facilities, a fitness center and games room for the kids. The on-site Wildflower Italian restaurant and lounge is a lively aprés ski spot.
Big Cottonwood Canyon is home to the Brighton and Solitude Ski Resorts and nestled at the end of the Little Cottonwood Canyon are Alta and Snowbird, a ski area paradise for powder hounds with winter activities for the whole family.

The Summit Restaurant: The Summit sits at the top of the iconic Snowbird Tram at 11,000 ft. Set over two levels, it’s the only place to eat at the top of the mountain and you’ll pay a little more, but it’s North America’s highest year-round lodge and the views, organic food and local microbrews are worth the premium.
Mid-Gad Restaurant: The Mid-Gad is a cafeteria-style restaurant open daily through the ski season. Located at the top of the Mid-Gad lift, it is the only mid-mountain restaurant and is quieter than the summit or base restaurants. Enjoy indoor and outdoor dining with great views and a good selection of, burgers, pizza, chili, salads, snacks and beer on tap.
The Forklift: Located on the Skier Plaza deck, the Forklift is a casual and convenient family-friendly breakfast and lunch spot with burgers, sandwiches and salads.
The Birdfeeder: Another favorite on the plaza deck is the Birdfeeder, an easy stop for a quick snack or a tasty burger with great vegetarian options.
General Gritts Grocery Store: General Gritts is a grocery and liquor store. The full service deli offers delicious breakfast burritos, sandwiches and soups for a quick snack on the go.
Rendezvous: Rendezvous is a full-service cafeteria on Level 2 with a good selection of sandwiches, soups, pastas and a salad bar.
Tram Car Pizza: Located on Level 2, Tram Car Pizza has a wide selection of pizzas and calzones on a handmade crust. Grab a slice on the go or dine-in for a pizza feast.
Baked & Brewed Café: Warm yourself up with a cup of joe, freshly baked goods or a grab and go waffle cup at Baked & Brewed on Level 2. For the health conscious, a fresh fruit and veg smoothie will give you power for your day on the slopes.
Steak Pit: If you’re looking for the best steak and seafood in Snowbird, the Steak Pit is the place! The interiors are rustic with cozy leather booths giving it a true steakhouse atmosphere.
Tram Club: Located in the Tram Base station, the Tram Club is the ‘local watering hole’ and the closest you’ll get to the lively aprés ski of other Rocky Mountain Resorts. The Tram Club has it all – billiards, big screen sports, live music, dancing and a typical bar style menu with a fully-stocked bar and delicious winter warmer cocktails.
The Atrium: You can’t miss the Atrium for a gourmet coffee and pastry, a pre-ski breakfast or hearty lunch buffet.
SeventyOne: Step back to the 70s! The SeventyOne has a great ski vibe with retro 70s décor, American grill favorites and tasty vegan options. Located on the bottom level of Cliff Lodge it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor dining, mountain views and family-friendly aprés ski after a day on the slopes.
Aerie: Located on the 10th floor, the modern Aerie serves up upscale American gastropub cuisine with a sushi bar, extensive wine list (40 pages!) and signature cocktails, all overlooking Snowbird’s scenic terrain.
El Chanate: A casual, family-friendly Mexican restaurant and cantina with daily food specials, delicious margaritas and an extensive tequila collection. Enjoy an après margarita while the kids play in the adjoining games arcade.
Creekside Café: The Creekside Day Lodge is a great base to explore the Gad Valley and Snowbirds beginner runs. The Creekside Café has a large sundeck and is a great spot for sandwiches, burgers, burritos, soups or a quick mid-run snack.
The Lodge Bistro: Based at the Lodge at Snowbird Resort, the Lodge Bistro and Lounge is an ideal setting for an intimate dinner or aprés ski. The restaurant offers an elegant menu with a French twist while a more casual menu of sandwiches, salads and specialty burgers is on offer in the lounge.
Wildflower: The Wildflower is a cozy Italian bar and restaurant based at the Iron Blossom Lodge. A great place to relax after a day of skiing with a cozy fireplace, TV to watch the sports games, a pool table, fantastic après ski specials and delicious pizzas.

When the snow melts, Snowbird transforms into a summer resort with just as much adventure, altitude, and awe. Although known for its fresh powder and winter activities, the warmer months bring a wealth of sunshine and fun times.
Hiking trails journey along wildflower-filled meadows, aspen groves, and rocky ridgelines, offering something for every type of explorer. Popular routes like the Peruvian Gulch Trail and the path to Hidden Peak give you big views with a rewarding climb. You can also hitch a ride on the Snowbird Tram to take in the scenery without breaking a sweat.
For thrill-seekers, the Snowbird Mountain Coaster and Alpine Slide deliver fast, twisty fun with a backdrop of sweeping canyons. You’ll also find a bungee trampoline, climbing wall, mountain biking and a whole lineup of kid-friendly summer activities in the Snowbird pedestrian village.

Tram to the Summit: The scenic Snowbird tram is not only for skiers and snow lovers. The tram operates year-round and opens up miles of summer trails and stunning 360-degree vistas of the Salt Lake Valley. Hike or bike your way back to base or take a scenic return journey on the tram.
Mountain Coaster: Snowbird Mountain Coaster is located at the base of the Peruvian chairlift at the Snowbird Center. From the top of the track you travel along 3,120 feet of twists, turns and horizontal loops, descending 160 vertical feet for the ride of your life! This gravity powered freefall is controlled by you, the driver!
Alpine Slide: In the summer months the Snowbird Chickadee bowl becomes a sledding journey on the Snowbird Alpine Slide. The dual track slide is an adventure for all ages (7 and up) twisting and turning through fields of wildflowers back to the Tram deck.
Snowbird Resort is geared towards family fun! Other kid-friendly Snowbird resort activities include: summer tubing, bungee trampoline, challenging rock climbing wall, vertical drop, suspended rope course and the ultimate obstacle course.
Camp Snowbird: If you’re looking to escape into the wilderness (or take a sneaky spa session!), Camp Snowbird offers great summer activities for ages 5-15 with fun weekly themes, historic tours, wildflower tours and creative experiments and activities to keep all ages entertained.
Oktoberfest at Snowbird Resort: Don’t miss the Oktoberfest at Snowbird Resort which is one of the biggest festivals in Utah and consistently voted among the best Oktoberfest celebrations in the US!

Snowbird has an abundance of trails. Whether you take the tram to the summit and hike the mountain, discover miles of trails from the base areas or explore from the many trailheads, Snowbirds summer trail map is vast with alpine lakes, cascading waterfalls, beautiful sunflowers and the elusive mountain goats that play on the slopes from March to May.
You can access many hiking trails from the base of the Alta Ski Area including the easy Cecret Lake Trails, the challenging Germania Pass and the moderate Catherine’s Pass with the best views of Mount Superior and Devil’s Castle. For a family-friendly, wheelchair-accessible hike, the Temple Quarry Trail is a 0.3-mile paved nature walk at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. An interpretive trail that is both educational and enjoyable. Wherever you roam, please leave only footprints behind!
